¡Viva! entrevista

¡Viva! (Manchester)

Where did the idea for the film come from?
From my own experience in romance. I feel some empathy with Aparisi, who is the one in the story who loves without being loved. But don’t worry for me, I’m happy after all my years of suffering.

Was Chacun Cherche Son Chat an inspiration?
No. I have seen this movie by Cedric Klapisch and I liked it a lot. But I didn’t think on it til my director of photography, Elisabeth Prandi, mentioned the similarities. (I have to say that in “Pactar con el gato” –A Pact with the Cat- the cat is never lost; it’s just a Julia’s trick). In fact, Elisabeth’s one-eyed cat, Jo-Jo, was the real inspiration.

I believe this was Rose Avalon’s first film (apologies if I am wrong!), how important do you feel she is in tying the film together?
You are right, it’s her first film. I knew Rose when she was a heavy-metal singer and a student of interpretation. It was a little risky to think on her like the first character, because she leads the action, but we had six months of rehearsals. We prepared the shooting all this long time with the main actors (Rose Avalon, Pau Roca –Aparisi-, Alberto Jiménez –David- and Belén Fabra –Sara-).

Do you agree with the idea in the film that one person in a relationship always dominates the other?
I agree that it’s true the most of times. But not always, of course. Sometimes, it’s just the contrary. I found the sentence in Anaïs Nin’s diaries. She spoke about her relation with Henry Miller. She was the one who was dominated.

Have you ever deceived anyone in the name of romance, as Julia does in the film?
I’m afraid I did. But I think audience will forgive anybody who deceives in the name of love. I hope everybody understands Julia.

How did you feel about receiving so many award nominations for the film?
It was really fantastic. But as you may know we lost everythink. In spite of that, we could dream by some several days and it was useful because everybody focused us. The film was released again in some cinemas.

The roofs of Barcelona play an important part in the film, why did you decide to use this location so prominently?
I have been living in different attics in Barcelona, always in the Gracia district. I like roofs (as if I were a cat). But I think cinema in general likes roofs, isn’t it? From "Mary Poppins" to "West Side Story". Or "El amor brujo" (directed by Rovira Beleta). The roofs are sites of fantasy, like mountain peaks in the middle of the city. Places where the laws are different, where everythink is possible.

Is the Gracia district of the city different to the rest of Barcelona – does it have its own identity?
Yes, it was a little town near the Barcelona and still has the atmosphere of a village (now it’s almost in downtown!). Gracia has been changing in the last twenty years. It’s almost a fashion district because of young people, most of them artists, who live on it, like Alfredo and Nuria, the videoartists who are living in the top of a tower and play themselves in the film. But Gracia it’s not yet a quarter for tourists. There are no important buildings, it’s still a place for living.

How important do you feel events such as Viva are, for promotion Spanish films in countries like the UK?
I am really happy with our presence in Viva. For us it’s very important and I feel it’s the real first step to introduce the film in the anglosaxon audience.

Do you think that audiences in different countries react to films differently?
Yes. I have been projectionist for more than ten years in my parents theater. I know people react differently in each session, each time, even the same day (it’s very difficult to know why). I guess the phenomenon it’s much more important when the film go to another country. "A Pact with the cat" is a kind of film with a little of kitsch and a little of humor not strictly Spanish. I hope English people like the film.
